Experience dynamic and cosmopolitan Krakow with IFC on our Poland Opera Holiday and Music holidays. Poland offers a multitude of things to do and see. Full of splendid buildings and medieval castles and home to 14 UNESCO World Heritage Site, Poland is rich in architecture, culture and history. Despite the heavy damage the country suffered in WW2, many of its historic buildings have been reconstructed.
Kraków was the home of the Wiślanie tribe (Vistulans), who occupied Małopolska (Little Poland) until the 10th century. Mieszko, the prince of Poland, brought together the northern and southern regions to establish a strong kingdom between 988 and 990. His son Bolesław, often known as the Brave, later established Kraków as the seat of a Polish bishopric. As a hub for trade, the city grew quickly, and in 1138 it became the capital of one of the largest principalities in Poland. After being severely damaged by Tatar invasions in the 13th century, it was swiftly restored and granted "Magdeburg rights," or a municipal constitution, in 1257.
Visit Krakow, Poland’s former capital, a stunningly beautiful and historic city. Marvel at Wawel Castle, the seat of Poland’s rulers in days past and widely said to be Krakow’s most spectacular sight.
