Experience the beautiful city of Verona with Institute for Culture Travel (IFC). IFC holidays offer you the chance to see magnificant Verona as well as enjoying The Arena di Verona opera Festival.
Verona is famous as the location for Shakespeare’s tale of the young lovers Romeo and Juliet, Terra-cotta and pastel shaded, Verona is in the bed of the river Adige as it winds its way from the Alps, between mountains and the plain, the city is both the beginning and the essence of the real Italy. At the crossroad of the north-south route from the Brenner Pass to Rome ad the east-west Milan-Venice road, it is easy to see the reasons for the city’s long-standing importance. The self-importance is hard to explain but it’s due partly to an extraordinary architectural, artistic, agriculture and financial wealth.
Apart from Rome, Verona is Italy’s best preserved Roman city with a Roman amphitheatre, a Roman bridge, Roman gates and a Roman theatre all providing prominent symbols. On these ancient foundations it is a ornately decorated and well-preserved Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance city with spectacular frescoed churches and houses. There is of course much more to Verona than its well-preserved Roman heritage. Shakespeare popularized the city as the romantic stage for his star crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. Her famous balcony can be visited on Via Cappello.
Today, lovers from all over the world as well as most of the city's permanent residents flock to the gracious Piazza Bra, just outside the Arena, each afternoon for the ritual "see and be seen" passeggiata and to enjoy a coffee or aperitif before the evening's activities. Just a few blocks away, Piazza Erbe hosts a colorful daily market. The statue in its center dates from Roman times and serves to remind us that this piazza has been a market place for nearly 2000 years. Best of all, Verona is home to dozens of good restaurants ranging from bargain trattorie to first class establishments where you may catch a glimpse of the rich and famous who attend the summer opera season or the many festivals held here throughout the year. What better way to spend a few days than exploring the Roman streets, visiting the churches and Juliet's house, tasting a few of the wines of the Veneto in the local restaurants along with some of the wonderful cuisine, and close with a performance of a spectacular and romantic tragedy, perhaps Aida.
